Letter from Germany 3 Years ago

Good morning all
I am happy to see pubs and gyms opening again in the UK. Here in Germany things are still grim: we have been "locked down" for nearly 6 months, medical grade masks since January, even stricter measures from today, now testing ALL schoolchildren (at least the schools are open) and next week obligatory for employers to offer tests for staff not working from home - yet still the "cases" continue to rise.
Any sensible person should realise that despite this theatre for the past 6 months, masks are not helping and lockdowns are not working. Only a full mediaeval curfew ("do not leave your village") might be effective but in this day and age of course it's not possible. The case numbers still rise. Why?
The problem here is that the government is setting our freedom based on incidence of the virus - positive cases per 100,000 population. Now it's over 100, hence the stricter measures. But it's a completely ridiculous metric because it doesn't take into account how many tests are done - and of course the more tests done, the more "cases" (and false positives) will be found. So is it any surprise that the incidence is increasing when we are testing more people - adding in millions of school tests - and next week employees? Incidence for the first wave last March, when people actually died, was about 50 per 100,000 maximum - because few tests were being done, and no blanket testing of huge portions of the population with no symptoms. Surely the metric should take into account "cases" per test done. The number of deaths here continues to drop as the case numbers rise.
I am pinning my hope on a drop in incidence as spring progresses, this being a seasonal virus, and a return to some sort of normality by June. But if they continue this mad testing...
Thanks for reading my little rant. I'm glad of this forum to be able to post my thoughts from time to time x
