What astonishes me... 2 Years, 8 Months ago
is how, yet again, media and gullibles will simply go along with something. Women in Afghanistan will now have total freedom to be educated and to work "as long as they obey Islamic law".

It doesn't seem to strike media that religious laws - or any laws, come to that - are subject to interpretation.

It's quite recently that Christianity allowed Catholics to kill Protestants.

UK law allows liars to be believed.

Sharia law may well declare that women can only work or be educated within certain boundaries.

Still, thanks to Covid law, at least their faces won't be quite as covered up as those in the rest of the world.

A brief reminder of when this happened would be much appreciated.

Was the Vatican, the leader of Catholics, involved or in favour?

The Taliban spokesperson at the press conference sounded to me to be heralding a return of the oppression of women and girls. The BBC and CNN seem to me to be reporting on the situation of women cautiously and not being gullible at all.

Activist Pashtana Durrani says that people must be wary.

"For starters, you have to understand that what they say and what they are putting in practice, they are two different things," she told the BBC on Monday.

"Girls in Herat, they were not able to go to their universities; girls in Kandahar, they were asked to go to their home and their male relatives were asked to fill in... their positions in the bank.

Compare & contrast Gov & media outrage at the treatment of women by The Taliban and the Saudi regime...

Much difference? Why no anger or coverage?

Because nobody told them to be angry.

Yes or another way to put it: no one expects them to be angry so they know they won't be criticised if they don't emote. I know I sound so cynical but I think most of it now is reactionary show (and "it" is most of what we debate on this site); playing to a 24/7 social media frenzy of righteousness; scrambling to be on the "right side".

The issues are real, of course, but the frenzy on top of it is a circus. Roll up, or be damned (cancelled). So the real issues get warped and distorted and go unaddressed; while the majority grasp and gasp for the oxygen of being "on script".

But who is writing the script, and why?

Esoteric, I know, but there we are.
