Dear Afghans

Don't travel here illegally please. We are saying this for your own good to protect you from unscrupulous boat operators, not because we are nasty, small-minded or won't take responsibility for a situation we created.

Also please do remember that if you do come here through the proper legal channel we haven't yet decided if you can stay long term.

These decisions are very complicated you see and depend also on how the popular press cover your behaviour. Regretably there are a lot of racists in the UK but we do need them to vote for us or where would we be...

Yours

The Government of the UK.

I think you may be right, Wyot. I wonder if they're expecting people to queue up at the Taliban's brand new and fully legal asylum seeker processing office. Punishing people for travelling illegally seems very unfair in the circumstances.

The BBC interviewed three people in the street about Afghan refugees the other day: one woman, who said that it wasn't fair that Afghan refugees would be housed in preference to Brits, another woman, who said Britain was being "overrun" and was "full up" and a man, who said they'd make a welcome contribution to British society. So, going by that, the "keep out, we're British" message was the stronger one.

I always agreed that we should sort our homeless veterans first. Even when I was living abroad.

It's the easier one to most people Jo; bless them.

Not necessarily. You could be frustrated by being homeless and always overtaken in the queue, without actually wanting anyone to be left in a dangerous place.
