Campaigner fighting for those who claim to be wrongly convicted of sex offences on the word of an accuser ‘should be put in for a Damehood’
No-one knows how many innocent people are in prison. Those in charge of the justice system admit there are some. That’s why there are procedures for correcting miscarriages of justice. Every year a few prisoners win lengthy legal battles to clear their names.
But some justice campaigners and support organisations claim these successful appeals are just the tip of the iceberg, and that in fact there are thousands in prison because they were falsely accused. Now the campaigners have designated September 9 as the first ‘Falsely Accused Day’, when events will be held to raise awareness of the issue.
****************** FASO owes its long existence to one remarkable woman. Margaret Gardener is a retired civil servant and part-time auxiliary nurse, who joined the group after her husband was accused of sex attacks on young girls. Roger Gardener died of cancer in prison in 2009, still maintaining his innocence. Margaret says she has seen the evidence and is convinced her husband was the victim of false allegations. She has since helped hundreds of others in his position, as the Director of FASO and often the person taking helpline calls and answering emails.
