Politicians know their Number One priority is getting votes. And the way to do that is to get the media to support them. So they go along with populist causes - many of which make no sense economically or morally. Since the loudest voices tend to belong to extreme loonies and the most elected democratically depend on image - good hair, nice teeth - the answer to this is we are led by handsome or beautiful brain dead MPs who dare not take unpopular positions. And media - ratings; sales; praise - obey the strongest and simplest shouts.
