I have changed my mind on this one.

The laws existed before Trump clearly encouraged insurrection following a clearly lost election; why should the laws not be upheld and he barred from running?

Yes, no doubt the motives are also political. But so what? Forgetting Trump and politics, should those who have done what he did be barred from running from office?

A Yes to this question seems reasonable to me. A No just because Democrats are also using these rules to gain political advantage unreasonable.

I think Trump encouraged protest (and was delighted it became so high profile) but times have changed since the law was written about those who fought in the Civil War and his opponents are using a technical loophole in order to try to stop his inevitable re-election (which will be awful, by the way).

It is probably a long shot legally but clearly some US lawyers think his behaviour can be interpreted under the 14th Amendment, anachronism or not; so let it be tested I say! The man portrays himself as a great patriot - but is the opposite.
