I find your story very interesting, especially as Gary and Mike both stated that the song was written by them while reading a music paper (an article titled "rock n roll part 1") with the vocals first & stated the idea for the "hey" instrumental came after for the b-side.

However, whatever story is true or not, I do know that Glitter has been paid many, many royalties on the song in the past as it was used in sports stadiums for many years. Maybe Leander had started the song before Glitter came in, maybe because they were working together when it came out "Paul Raven" helped him on it from the start, I don't know, but I do not believe Glitter had zero involvement in the songs that came out. Before "rock n roll" the songs mike composed for paul/gary were very weak by comparison.

"Paul" himself lays claim to being in the studio at its creation and playing part of the instrumental portion. Regardless of that being true or not and even if he didn't write a note of it (which I personally believe he did) he has been getting co-writers credit and royalties on it since 1972, so the original point I made about him being set to get a payment out of it would still stand.

Once the act and the hit formula was established though it would have been much easier to write for it, then I imagine Pauls part was higher and freed up a lot.
Case in point to R+Rpt1, I bet "I Love You Love" was written by Paul but also credited to Mike as that was the arrangement.(notably not so sampled though..)

Time will tell if our little conversation here becomes a bigger one, I shall watch with interest.
I have quite a large Gary Glitter collection in the library, and some of the singles were a little lost on the way to say the least later on.
I don`t know anybody else with a copy of "Papa Oom Mow Mow"!

I saw him live twice , very enjoyable btw.

I think I have Papa Oom Mow Mow in my archives, along with a 12inch pic disc of 'Through The Years' and a shaped pic disc of 'Dance Me Up'.

My favourite Glitter B Side is probably "I.O.U." I'll have to go check what it was B side to. I just remember it was quite early on - either 'Hello Hello ..' or 'Leader of the Gang'.

Never actually got to see him live, although one of my friends said he sounded "as good as the records."

Loved his totally over the top version of "House Of The Rising Sun."

Gary's Christmas shows were absolutely marvellous.

It was interesting though that it was totally barred for anyone at all to see him for an hour before he went on stage. He was occupied "becoming The Leader".

I have a copy of papa om mow mow. Also A little boogie woogie (should have been top 5).

Gary was great in concert. I'd say that he was much better in concert than both the rolling stones and tom jones.

Hi,

So we are agreed it seems that Ooh Ooh Baby contains a sample from Rock And Roll which Gary co-wrote, and he should therefore be credited on Britney's album, but he is not. I think that's right, yes?

Can anyone explain how this would happen, we are dealing with majors here. Surely Sony/Bmg should have got the label copy right? Surely Universal Publishing who have Gary's catalogue would have had to have cleared it and would insist on a credit, no?

Sorry for being confused! but any clarification would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I don't think anyone has said he's not been credited, have they?

Check her CD.

Nope; if that's what it says - and if it IS a sample - you have your story.

I'm not convinced it's a sample. It sounds to me like it could be a lookalike. And you can't copyright a riff or an arrangement.

As I discovered with Oooga Chagga!

Well there's the confusion. Anyone got any idea? It certainly sounds like a sample but we need someone with inside knowledge I guess as to what has gone on here???

Can anyone help?

I can only speculate, but echo JK`s thoughts on this.
If getting clearance on a sample is proving difficult or unnesesary the done thing is to recreate a similar part.
