Got the sad news last night that John Pilger had passed away.
Then one of the most prominent journalists of recent times has passed away, the man who was unfit to the death to use critical journalism to expose the abuse of power, not least during wars. He knew how badly the power could react to journalists who exposed the truth and was an active fighter for Julian Assange's freedom for more than a decade. He was always invited and has attended every event he could, to speak Julian's case and write articles criticizing the treatment of his country.
We had good communication and it was a pleasure to contribute to his coming to Iceland a few years ago at the Reykjavík film festival. He sharpened my understanding that journalism that doesn't have justice guided is not worth much. Unfortunately, that understanding is often blinded in the class. He was the toughest of people in the fact that real journalism was critical and hard access to power. Everything else is just a direction of propaganda of power or at least a distraction.
I am grateful to have met John Pilger and will remember good times. He will be sorely missed.
