It has always been a liberal place, even when I first went there over 30 years ago. It reminded me of Soho on steriods. I do remember a lot of homeless and stoners but most were harmless.
I don't remember it ever looking this rough.
What are your memories of the city or California JK?
I once drove a Kombi van from LA to San Fancisco and ran out of petrol at midnight on the Golden Gate bridge. A police car kindly pushed us to a service station right at the end of the bridge.
I loved San Francisco and more so because it was a bit rough and ready.
My brother lives there. I never liked it - found it not at all "rough and ready" in the 1980s - very "twee and cute" with the little hills on the roads, Chinatown, the port all very polished and touristy, saying "aren't we cute?".

I did find all the major cities a little rough and ready in America. Some are just better than others, I hated Chicago but some of the suburbs are like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
I did find Detriot interesting but the locals know if you're a stranger in town.
I didn't travel in a camper van but in a beat-up pickup truck, either sleeping in it or staying in odd motels. I did sleep with the lights on in a few of them.
Las Vegas is just an adult playground. If you are not into gambling or strip clubs then all there is to do is just watch classic rock bands.
