When NATO carried out airstrikes for several months on Serbia during the Kosovo war in 1999, the operation came in response to a new wave of ethnic cleansing of Kosovar Albanians in the Western Balkans by the Serbian military. The NATO bombing continued until an agreement was reached, which led to the withdrawal of Serbian troops who were then replaced by NATO forces.
As for NATO now, there is, “virtually no chance” that the alliance would get involved to halt Israel’s deadly campaign against civilians in Gaza in the same way it did to end the raging war in former Yugoslavia, according to Adnan Huskic, a political scientist specializing in EU, NATO and Western Balkan affairs.
The U.S. is an integral part of NATO and if Washington is not interested in intervening “to stop the bloodshed in Palestine...then I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Huskic said.
