This may help you find a decent pub - and not have to rely on flawed review sites.

Thanks but no thanks Barney, I have not discovered a crappy pub by using Trip Advisor. I avoid Spoons at all costs.

I think pubs close too early as it is

With the vast majority of the nation's workforce on the way to/or at work by 7/8am - the existing hours are sufficient.

Midnight or later, during the week, is an unnecessary enticement - though holiday areas/weekend leisure need consideration.

The only Spoons pub I know in Swindon is The Savoy - a magnificently converted 1930's art deco cinema.

Spoons are know for saving historic buildings, which would otherwise be lost in this modern era.

Here are a few:-

- The Royal Opera House, Tunbridge Wells

- The Hamilton Rooms, City of London

- Velvet Coaster, Blackpool

- Winter Gardens, Harrogate

All refurbished/renovated and saved by Spoons - and given new leases of life!

The ABC is lovely, Barney, but the other one was destroyed, not saved.
I dont think Wetherspoons were responsible for that though, because it had already been flattened and butchered when they bought it?
You probably know more, so I would be interested to hear.

I think pubs close too early as it is, to be honest. Closing any earlier could mean more drinking in the parks and alleyways. Drinking at home is ok but should we try to discourage lonely drinking? Stella Artois (tastes revolting) was dubbed Wife Beater for many years by the police and landlords. When people went to sort out domestic abuse the police always saw cans or bottles of Stella.

They extended the opening hours years ago, saying that early closing time forced people to drink quickly and get drunk.

Now they are shortening the hours because extended drinking times make people get drunk.

I bet I could get plastered in just half an hour if I put my mind to it.
