TOPIC: My Grandmother
#25253
My Grandmother 16 Years, 5 Months ago
Firstly, thank you so much to JK for being brave enough to keep us updated on the situation with his mother. I have thought over alot of what was said, and getting the Christmas card with the photos of her was very touching to me.

Now it is the turn of my Grandmother. Born in 1913, she has seen two world wars. She was a heavy smoker for much of her life, but did give up at 80. A stroke 3 years ago made har wobbly on her feet and a little forgetful. Another stroke 2 weeks ago has changed her. She is not Grandmother I knew just 3 weeks ago. She remains in the chair without even getting up to drink or reach out to pick up her food. Today she has been taken into hospital with oxygen starvation. She was not waking up this morning when the carer called.

I know this is repeated all over the world, but seeing a loved one succumb to the effects of old age is very sad indeed. Seeing her full of life in photos taken just 15 years ago almost hurts me to look at them. However that is her as she should be. I naturally hope that she will get over this recent incident, but I cannot believe Christmas will ever be the same now.

On a brighter note, it is the luck of the draw I think - my aunt (93 and also a previous smoker) still drives (very well) and takes long hikes over the countyside and cooks a wonderful spread when I visit.

I am so sorry Teddy. Strokes are cruel as they arrive without warning. All my grandparents are now gone, but my mum is 71 now, and I now find I'm not certain I could continue life without her.

I do so hope your Grandmother can understand your words of comfort and love.

All the best mate.
