nowhere near as good as his brilliant show on that US Prison (where he was so good that I sent him a complimentary note and got back a lovely Thank You) - the problem Louis has is that his approach comes close to parody and if he slips into it (as he did here... "should I kill that pig?") he looks superficial and fake whereas when he's really intrigued and puzzled and allows the subject to talk (like the lifer in the prison) he becomes incredibly revelatory - rather like Alan Whicker at his best.
I quite like Louis, on the one hand he can appear to be too friendly with the people who are the subject of his documentaries and not impartial enough but he always puts the story first.
An example is i remember an episode of his Weird Weekends show when he stayed with Neil and Christine Hamilton and they were accused of kidnap and assault during filming, it went something like this:
Loius: What's Happened??
Neil and Christine: We've been charged with kidnapping a girl and assault!
Louis: That's Terrible!!....... Was it sexual??
Been sympathetic but having his journalistic eye about him at all times when he thinks to ask "Was it sexual??".
P.S: The charges were later thrown out, i'm wondering did good ol' max clifford have a hand in getting this story to the papers??
I actually remember that episode now lol, didn't Clifford leave his mic on and end up saying loads of stuff and thinking he wasn't been recorded and when Louis confronted him he threw a hissy fit. Hilarious haha
As Jonathan says Louis is at his best when he sits outside of the subject looking in. A little disturbed that Jonathan sent him a complimentary note. I don't think he's yet worthy of that. A little disturbed that Jonathan describes his thankyou as 'lovely'. So any 'thankyou' from Theroux would be lovely? Unless he said 'Lovely thankyou'.
