Some people really need to voluntarily give their driving licence away..... 15 Years, 11 Months ago
...Every morning, I go to the shop and buy my newspapers and fags(not that I have ever smoked I just like the packaging;))and park next to a similar car as mine but slightly older.
Today, that very car has another car completely embedded in it.
I asked the shop assistants what had happened and they informed that the old lady driver had had difficulty parking and two other vehicles had actually been towed away from the scene which she had also hit.
It`s hard to describe the silly destruction caused by an empty car park and an elderly lady, who I`m sure is very nice and distressed, trying to get into a space, but is it not time that there was a campaign in which people voluntarily gave their driving licences back and admitted that they can`t do it anymore?
I`m not suggesting spot checks for a minute as a little dignity is rightly deserved, but with the dignity comes experience and a mildly suggestive campaign would not go amiss.
Only last week, I narrowly avoided an elderly lady on the wrong side of the road, very probably the same one that caused havoc on stationary cars here.
If I was an inexperienced driver, I may not be pointing this suggestion out.

It all boils down to the laws being more attuned to Tabloid gimmicks than to reality.
Tabloids like to see people banned and jailed for being a little over the alcohol limit...while causing no harm...but testing old people who are statistically a known menace doesn't fit the Sun's profile for a grabbing headline.
My father is now 85,and just starting to suffer from a touch of dementure. He's gone skeletal, and as such is not suited to driving anymore. But as my mother is also now unfit to drive he keeps the car for short trips.
Banning people like this would be a very sensible safety precaution...but unpopular,so we get the attention turned towards 'easier' victims.
Voluntary, well Mart anyone can keep their licence, but simply refuse to drive...so why give it up?
Stopping these people will require some sort of legal intervention...and even more importantly some analysis of how we can make sure public transport and local services can be provided to remove the need for them to want to drive in the first place.
