TOPIC: Food and Farms

This week, I have kept a strict regime of bothering to make the trip to local farm shops to pick up fresh produce, instead of topping at a major supermarket at any point.
For finding produce that for some reason (probably something to with EEC)is seemingly to large for supermarkets (including some leeks , I kid you not nearly 3 feet in length!) I cannot suggest you enough that you check these little places, in front of huge fields, out of you are on holiday in the UK this summer.

One thing to watch amongst the locally supplied goods though is that there does seem to be a minor chain supplier at work putting a lot of the same jarred products in them.(probably a health food supplier)

That said, one of the products that you can always get in the farm shop and in your supermarket is Fentimans Curiosity Cola.
My word, that stuff is gorgeous and will it not be a shame if Coca Cola cotton on to this rather better product than their own ,buy the recipe and ruin it?

Oh dear.
That was tempting fate.

And by the way, the English asparagus we tried this week seemed to be not quite at the peak it was when we got our first bite of it a few weeks back.
A very good year for it though and their is still a lot of it about.

And look out for any garlic that it is in it`s green state currently, this can be eaten raw and is not as frightening as you would think.

I'm back staying in Margate for my sins!
But it does give me a chance to follow up your recipe suggestions more easily.....so what's on the menu this weekend?

Sadly Soli, I shall be leaving for London shortly and won`t be cooking this weekend, but I am just getting together my mega menu for a couple of weeks time for the party of 24.
The biggest request is for the garlic curry I do, for which I have ordered up the correct amount of garlic which will arrive on Friday from the Isle of Wight, so whilst you are here, if you see any garlic that proclaims itself to be from the Isle of Wight, snap it up. It is without a doubt the best producer in the world of the stuff.
I have been to the farm where it comes from and the aroma is overwhelming!
We had the single worst meal we had ever had on Thursday night out.
As soon as the generic deep fried parcels from 365 arrived on the tables in front of us all, alarm bells rang!
But what can one say? In the UK people accept the fact that a pint of beer and the food is identicle in most main establishments.
Where have the skilled cooks (and I don`t mean chefs) and indeed, celler masters, gone?

Give my regards to the Winter Gardens.
