TOPIC: Charles Wheeler RIP
#32181
Charles Wheeler RIP 15 Years, 10 Months ago
I met him several times when I was based in New York and found him a decent, educated, erudite man with a good sense of humour.

I was lucky enough also to know Alistair Cooke during those decades.

The BBC was a great place then.

Agreed. He was one from the old-school, and one of the very best at that.
In this age of dumbing down and trivialising the news, it's good to remember the high standards of yesteryear.
And yes, I do agree the BBC has mostly lost the plot now, but you do occasionally get the odd gem.
This comes from a 24 year old, who grew up watching the BBC decline under John Birt.

He had the perfect voice for News Broadcasting.
He was still working in his final days.

RIP

I have just put a face to the name.

What a lovely broadcaster, he really will be missed.
