New Orleans/Houston... looks nasty 15 Years, 8 Months ago
Cuba damaged - now Gustave goes for the States - and Mother Nature yet again shows us just how puny we humans are, with unfortunate delusions of grandeur.

It`s dreadful that New Orleans and it`s people have to go through this again.

Awful, love and the best of luck to all the lovely people there.

It's my second favourite city in the USA (after New York and just ahead of Denver).

The cajun/creole food is fabulous.

I must dig out our feature on K-Paul's restaurant there in Ent USA.

Bush, like all leaders, full of cliches, platitudes and waffle about Gustav.

If I hear one more politician say "our thoughts are with their families..."

They are not. They are incapable of thoughts and if they were capable they would be wondering what is for dinner.

Big controversy over MICHAEL MOORE comments about the Storm being a judgement on the Republicans by the big G.

I just hope everyone gets out before the storm strikes because it looks very very awful at the moment.

Certainly we should praying and thinking of all those who live in that area tonight and tomorrow.

I remember when Katrina devastated New Orleans and Mr Bush gave his speech about seeing a new New Orleans rising from the ruins. He did very little to help the people there, possibly because they were mainly Democrats who weren't likely to vote for him.

The last situation was handled very badly. Has the American government learned it's lesson? I doubt it.

Meanwhile, I wonder if Fats Domino has left a notice on his house this time saying "I AM NOT DEAD!".

I wish all the people of New Orleans the very best.

These increasingly more frequent extreme weather conditions (i.e. huricanes 3 years ago, floods in uk in 2000 and 2007, and hurricanes again this year) are growing indicators of climate change and America is the biggest perpertrator of this. It shows a growing need that we must change our lives, use less energy, drastically reduce the number of flights we take and cut down on driving.

I think that a lot of UK residents do not really understand the scale of a disaster like Katrina, there is still a huge "it couldn`t happen here" attitude.
To those people, all I can say is, this is such a small place that it would be no good running to Aunties at Eastbourne until it blows over.

Actually talking about the Sussex part of the world, can one imagine a hurricane hitting Seaford? It would simply be wiped out, there is no way the sea defences would hold anything back at all from the town and once you get past the seafront, most of the town from what I recall is below sea level.

There was a great Neil Tennant song in the 80`s called "It Couldn`t Happen Here", with many Kings Cross station references, I always found it spooky that the song seemed to depict what did happen there 6 mths later, although it was probably not what he might have meant.
I think us 60`s born people, were all brought up with the "it won`t happen" attitude. Sadly, it does.

I've got a VHS version of this! It was a comercially released video. Was there only the one edition to be released on tape?

Eastbourne is a nice place. I'm not sure if a hurricane would hit Sussex with full force because it would have to cross other land to get there. If it came from Europed then the channel isn't big enough for it to rebuild strength, and east and west would mean other parts of Britain got the main impact. But I'm no expert.

I see Gustav has reduced to a Cat 3 storm now, so hopefully New Orleans can survive the encounter.

All I recall about Eastbourne, to be honest, is not being able to park anywhere near the little theater there and they used to have a brilliant studio which I think was called ICC. I think your are right though Denise, if a major storm hit Sussex it would probably swell over the South Downs and Kent is probably more likely to suffer the worst.

Latest on Gustave... as usual, Mother Nature manages to false step humanity.

We're always ready for it when it doesn't happen, never when it does.
