Another blow for Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd :
Judy Davis was awarded $150,000 in damages including interest over defamatory newspaper articles, in a Supreme Court judgement today that took into account her continuing hurt and anguish.
Justice Peter McClellan ordered Nationwide News to pay the two-time Oscar nominee $150,736 plus her legal costs for publishing articles in The Daily Telegraph and its sister newspapers in Perth and Queensland which implied she had behaved in an "unreasonable and selfish" way in opposing a development in Birchgrove.
The newspapers reported that Davis had lobbied against a proposal to upgrade lighting at Birchgrove Oval to make the area safer for children, in articles a jury later found implied she was "heartless" and "indifferent to the risk of injury to hundreds of young children".

Although these sort of cases can really only be taken on by the rich-as in the
Max Mosley privacy win against the
News of The World-they are setting precendents.
More proof that the tabloids may have to start thinking differently about the casual way in which they spout off about people without a thought of the hurt they cause.
Perhaps lawyers may start to take cases on a no-win no-pay basis as is common in the US once they feel they can convincingly win.
