Eastenders story sparks mass complaints 15 Years, 8 Months ago
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7622019.stm

Funny one this. In the 80s Dirty Den did the dirty with his daughter's best friend ( Michelle age just 16 and a school girl ) and got her pregnant. Yet I cant remember mass complaints.

In 2008 we get a 15 year old kissing this bloke and yet it triggers mass complaints and he is described by the programme and BBC as a paedophile and the NSPCC has supposedly advised on the storyline.

Very strange state of affairs.

I saw a bit of it - and it is totally unbelieveable and unrealistic. The two actors are also very close in real age which makes it look like a normal relationship if you are looking in without knowing the background.

Seems just another excuse for the BBC to stoke the Witch Hunt mentality - and the complaints were probably from those who worked on the programme or people who found the storyline stupid.

Eastenders is now a washed up series which serves the BBC's aim of dumbing down amidst all their reality shows.

If it was not for programmes like Dr Who and Panorama and the odd Costume Drama ( Tess ) the BBC would be irrelevant. Its news coverage is awful - although its internet site is fast moving and does seem to pick up on most things.

I see nothing wrong with the storyline. What may ruffle a few feathers is that many children watch the show and some parents might find it inappropriate viewing before the watershed. Understandable?

I've never watched Eastenders.

If it was just a kiss then no big deal. I'm sure most children could understand the difference between acting and reality - so long as their parents do. From what I read about the soaps there is no shortage of murders. Wasn't one character buried alive? Surely more disturbing for kids than a mere kiss.

That suggests I shouldn't comment unless I have the slightest idea of what I'm talking about!

Mind you, it's an interesting notion you're trying to introduce

I did use the word "if", and my point was a fairly general one.

as the tabloids can't get enough of this stuff-why is anyone complaining ?

On Holy Moly there's a story about GG:

Jeremy Kyle show

"I usually watch Fern & co in the morning but this time caught the end of Jeremy Kyle. I was appalled to see a bunch of kids dancing about to Gary Glitters song 'Rock n Roll'.
"Personnelly I would bring back public hanging for the likes of him, but what do you do; play one of his hits - for which no doubt he receives royalties - and worse still you do it over footage of kids dancing. If he saw that he'll probably be laughing himself stupid while banging one out to it. Please justify your actions"

no doubt they'd probably take their children to such hangings if they still happened !

Your comment was a tad accusatorial. From someone who never watched the show i fail to understnad how you can comprehend any opinon. One could apply the word "if" to any thread without any knowledge whatsoever.

It's a good point JK. Thinking back to that Dirty Den and Michelle story, him having sex with a gymslip Michelle was part of his 'bad boy' pinup image, a very similar relationship is replayed in 2008 and its all about paedophilia and child molestation.

Incredible to think how social mores can be changed in the space of a few years by a concerted witchhunt and media generated hysteria. Only 10 years or so ago and every heterosexual man in England was drooling over 15/16 year old tennis sexpot Anna Kournikova. Recently I watched a DVD of Jasper Carrot/Robert Powell's 'the Detectives' (brilliant) BBC comedy from the 90's and basically a running joke throughout the whole series is that Powell's character has a bit of a thing about girls in school uniform.

In reality you do not have to actually watch the soaps to know what goes on in them. My TV magazine has the main "plots" headlined on the cover and through several features inside. Many TV chat shows harp on about the soaps, and there are the numerous trailers, etc.

Do I gather from your comment that when you contribute to a thread about child pornography you do have some direct experience of it?? Or does your commenting rule only apply to others.

I re-read my post and cannot find anything "accusatorial" within it.
