WHO do you think should be the next Doctor? 15 Years, 6 Months ago

I still think James Aubrey would be a fine Doctor. He's not known for any other major part (aside from Ralph in "Lord of the Flies"), and he has great acting ability. He would be a slightly more mature Doctor than Tennant, but Stephen Moffat is said to be taking the show into darker realms, so that might suit.
I do hope it's not James Nesbitt. He's been suggested by some, but he can't lose his Irish accent. He was even an Irish Pontius Pilate.
Another suggestion has been Robert Carlyle, mainly due to his links to Stephen Moffat, but can he be anything other than Scottish?
If not James Aubrey, I think they should go for a totally unknown but talented actor - but not by holding a TV talent show with public votes.

When Peter Davison was handing over to Colin Baker he said that whichever actor played the part they must always have that certain essence which is The Doctor.
Until RTD took over, Peter Davison and Colin Baker had the worst scripts but battled valiantly to bring The Doctor through to us. Sylvester McCoy struggled, but found brief form in the movie when he handed over to Paul McGann who was excellent.
Chris Eccleston, who I admire greatly, never got into the part, didn't have that essence, and rightly bailed out early.
David Tennant does have the essence, and has hauled the show above the standard of scripts several times.
My favourite was Jon Pertwee. He took the character to a new high, with help from the wonderful Verity Lambert.
My hope is that Stephan Moffat can restore Dr Who to it's former glory. It's not just about UK TV ratings. Dr Who used to be a worldwide phenomena, and brought in more money for the BBC than anything else. It has struggled on the world stage since it's return, mainly because The Doctor used to be unique, mysterious, above human emotions and failings (he is an alien after all). RTD made him just like everyone else, in a show which didn't really stand out from the many American Sci-Fi productions.
We need to see the show winning awards for reasons other than the actors being 'dishy' or 'hot'. It needs to be good again.
