This Is England - superb film 15 Years, 5 Months ago
Thought it was fantastic; clearly part of the Mike Leigh school (I think he's such a leader).
The acting, writing and direction was magnificent.
The little kid was incredible, so was his strange "girlfriend" but best performance was the guy who played the "baddie" - he deserved an Oscar, a master class in subtle observation including extremes.
One of the best British films ever.
However - the Ch4 new habit of nervously announcing, before every part, that this "might offend" frightens me.
The Brand/Ross incident and the rabid tabloid reaction has clearly rattled the broadcasters. But instead of standing up to the bullies (a lesson from the movie) they capitulate.
We're not far from films like This Is England not being made, let alone shown.

We all endorse cencorship to some degree, JK. I'm sure you censor the comments on this board. Some might take it too far, but as a general rule we need a certain level of censorship.
I appreciate the warnings before films or shows. One night I flicked through the EPG and most channels had shows described as containing strong language. For me bad language a complete turn off. I've no objection to movies using it, but I do appreciate being told to expect it. I hear enough in real life.

All the performances were superb. The finale was harrowing, you could feel the tension building and knew what was coming. The bloke who played the bad guy looks like that guy who does those property shows on BBC 1 in the mornings.
