Whether or not the now fired boss of Harringay council saved hundreds of children from death or abuse does not matter.
I don't know and the Sun doesn't know - or care - whether the awful Baby P tragedy could have been averted by better management or whether the child protection unit worked brilliantly in dozens of other cases.

Too complicated.

Blood, vengeance, headlines, sales.

If this means no decent executives come into child care and many other babies die - that's loads of great future tabloid stories.
And nobody will connect the Sun witch hunt then.

I suppose it's a bit like having a clean driving licence for 20 years. It takes just one incident of carelessness to kill someone. Do the previous 20 years make a difference? No. Should they? No.

I can feel sorry for the social workers and Council leader, and I don't think anyone should hold this case personally against them, but they failed in their responsibility and must accept the consequences.

I don't think this is about vengeance.

I'm sure Ian Blair was a decent copper at one time, but there was no shortage of calls on this board for his dismissal. There's no difference, other than some have our support and some don't. The principle remains the same.

I find the screeching about her sacking extremely distasteful but then there is nothing about this case where anyone comes out smelling of roses including the media.

I have to agree with JK...more victims and deaths means more sensational headlines which is life sustaining for the tabloids. They aren't going to survive on good news!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if some tabloids instituted a real examination into social services and did some real investigative reporting-pointing out the waste of resourses in some public sectors and the ease of some like the police to get unlimited funds whilst social workers are starved of the ability to save the Baby P's of the world ? Only in my dreams.

No Murdoch editor would ever take it on after this: The Sun King was recently in Oz and the editor of his Melbourne Herald Sun was inexplicably sacked (despite increased sales) after a big story attacking the Victorian Police Commissioner Christine Nixon for taking a freebie inaugural flight on Qantas new A380 flight between Melbourne and Los Angeles.

She complained directly to Rupert Murdoch who claims he never interfers with his editors. The editor's other crime..taking the tabloid more up-market and out of the gutter.

It's fairly clear that social workers were not "starved of the ability" to help Baby P. They had ample opportunity to step in and protect the cild, but chose not to. The system was in place, the funding was available, the only thing missing was the will. The there is the doctor who failed to notice a broken back and broken ribs. The evidence points to astonishing incompetence at various levels, while the heads of departments pointed to targets and awards.

I agree that the tabloids exploit these situations, but that is to be expected and rather beside the point.

The sun ran a front page a week or so ago with the heads of the three women involved with the headline 'shame on you - go now' or some such.

It's a disgrace that they can treat these women as if they had abused kids themselves.

If the sun gets something wrong they will, after being made to by the lawyers' run a pissy little apology on page 24 with no regard for the person who fell victim to their haste and lies.

2 deaths in the same London Borough - lets hang the person responsible. Maybe time and effort could be given over to examining why it happened, is it really because three women were evil and incompetent or is it a wider issue with society and poverty?

I agree with some of what you say and the way in which Baby P's injuries were over-looked is bizarre..I really can't believe that social workers would deliberately ignore an injured child standing in front of them. It can't be that a whole heap of social workers are incompetant-it's that the culture has become incompetant over timeand we need to know the reason why.

There has been a steady build up of an emphasis placed on so many aspects of child protection..the 'pedo behind every bush' scenario and all that goes with it. The endless sensationalising of sex cases in the media ( I doubt that newspaper proprietors or many of today's journalists give a fig about child protection unless there is a juicy story in there).

To harp back on the Jersey home disgrace-it's a perfect example of how the media works today particularly where children are involved.

The original tale that swept the world was a beat-up of massive proportions and within a year the whole thing turns out to be an utter farce and with barey a mention.

How this happened is the real story for me but I doubt we will ever hear it..it will all be swept under the carpet. The great mass of the general public (and that includes me) are caught up in a massive case of Attention Deficit Disorder..writers like Nick Davies and his Flat Earth News and Richard Webster have put the case far more eloquently of how decisions taken 20 years ago have a range of unforseen results..I believe Baby P is one of these.

Perhaps social services are attracting the wrong people..one overlooking an injured child is one thing but here we have a raft of workers seemingly ignoring the obvious. I know if I was 20 today I wouldn't take a job that remotely involves dealing with children as I'd always be mindful of being wrongfuly accused and even if innocent, knowing the process would possibly destroy me anyway.

Clearly the whole system is broken and you cannot divorce or isolate incidents. We aren't going to hear about the process of how the dreadful case of Baby P arose as now scalps are being claimed. The system will remain in place.

And there will be more (and already are) Baby Ps on the way.
