2008 : Coldest Year on record since 2001 15 Years, 4 Months ago
and not only that the next year that was colder was in 1995. So 2008 was the second coldest year in the last 15 years.

In addition it was the second year to show a drop in temperature over the year.

With January this year already showing a depth of cold which could rival 1961 the cracks in the Global Warming argument are beginning to become clear to all but "Climate Professionals" who make a living out of trying to frighten us that the next Ice Age or Heat Age is upon us.

We have been lucky to have had the years 2002 - 2006 which had fabulous summers and very mild winters. They were great times - but it looks as if they were a short spell of hotter weather which sometimes occurs.

With outer London showing MINUS 8 on the BBC site tonight ( and minus 10 on others ) there are few people who now doubt the freeze is with us.

Lets hope the Gas shortage does not effect the UK because Russian gas is vital to power the UK.

Sorry, BR, I'm as jaded as you when it comes to many things. But you're wrong here. Don't look at the papers, don't read the reports. Just stick your head out of the door and observe. OK, so it's cold at the moment. That's not the point. The point is that, across the broader spectrum, any idiot can see that the weather's not what it should be. Typically the temperature difference between winter and summer is only 10 - 15 degrees. Call me a scaremonger if you like but if scaremongering means simply observing the facts then OK, yes I am one. You're also wrong about Russian gas supplies. 3 percent doesn't exactly count as heavily reliant. Now if Greece, France, Norway and/or Germany suffer shortages it might be a different story...

Thanks Locked Out.

I have a theory - and it is a theory with no hard evidence about the strangeness of the weather.

When you go back through MET office temperature charts ( they are available on the MET site ) for this century you can see a pattern.

Every time there is a major war the temperatures seem to get more extreme - both in the heat sense and in the cold sense.

Therefore the Afgan and Iraq shock and awe bombing created the warming in my view - and the campaign by GORE and others was to deflect attention from that.

Now we are moving away from that bombing the temperature is going back to normal.

The only way we will be able to prove this is to wait another 20 years - and see what happens.

The problem with these Global Warmingistas is that hey pretend normal things prove their case. For instance there is always erosion of coastline by the sea - this happens all the time and has happened for many millions of year - yet they say that is Global Warming. They then say there are droughts - and yet we know that these happened back in biblical times and could last for years. We even have had floods before and earthquake on large scale.

I can understand every generation fearing what is "not usual" but the Global Warming lobby are the biggest Conspiracy Theorists of all because they have created an industry around their views.

They say we will be under water by 2050 and temperatures will be up by 2 degrees. Well lets see what happens !

We have quite a thaw here today.

Traditionally the UK sees only a small difference in temperatures between summer and winter. I don't recall many really hot summers over the past 40+ years, or many really cold winters. 2005 and 2006 saw unusually hot UK summers, but last year was back to normal.

This hasn't been an unusually cold winter yet, at least where I live. Maybe some areas have it it colder than they are used to.

The only thing we can be completely certain about regarding this recent cold spell is that both the electric and gas companies will be making a nice killing out of it.

When everybody gets their overinflated gas bills, I just wish everybody would have the nerve to vote with their wallets and refuse to pay a penny. If the whole country did that, what are the gas companies gonna do? Cut everybody off? Instead, in a few months time they'll be in the news bragging of record profits.

The way the energy companies are holding everyone to ransom is I believe causing even more damage to the situation with the economy. Many businesses I fear will go under because they won't be able to afford the gas and electric bills. Just imagine what the energy bills must have been for Woolworths over the last month.

Also to those complaining about how cold it is... my stock answer is "It's supposed to be cold at this time of year!" It's just we've had so many mild winters and the masses have such short memories, they've forgotten what a proper winter is.

to be honest, "coldest winter since 2001" is not much of a shocker- after all 2001 was only 7/8 years ago lol

Can you please respond to my question on the earlier thread that you started, titled Global Warming Weather? Thank you.
