the article is spot on and one of the worrying aspects is how the UK courts are beginning to resemble US courts in their fanatacism.
Some aspects stand out to me-the manner in which the mass media has promoted baseless fears about sex crimes..as we saw with Rebbecah Wade and her "name a pedo" campaign and "Sarah's Law".
Not one scintilla of proof is offered that these campaigns have done one single thing to prevent a crime. And they have had decades now to do so. Yet none of those in the media or the self-appointed experts , NGOS, "victims" are pulled up or questioned on this in these times of mass Attention Defecit Disorder. Even worse-ambitious politicians, devoid of any real policies jump on the banwagon for cheap and quick advantage.
Oh for the days when passionate policiticans-both Conservative and Labour, saw politics as a way of serving their fellow citizens rather than a great career move.
Th second is the compensation angle which the writer only touches upon briefly (her 20 grand figure is an under-estimation) but which is an horrendous motivating factor in false allegations. If I personally know one who has falsely accused a CathoLic priest of abuse ( after the priest was found guilty) purely as he was desperate for cash and saw no harm in Jumping on the bandwagon, how many others are there ?
Significantly, the Catholic Church offers unlimited financial support for a variety of therapies for the genuinely abused by the clergy. Very little is accessed with the vast majority taking the money, thank you very much.
Thidly-the police are quite slavish about prosecuting these alleged crimes and I believe it's because they find it leads to easy convictions. Anyone who believes that powerful police have no scruples in banging up innocents, juts isn't paying attention.
At the same time, they make a rod for their own backs..as any number will tell you the Rebeccah Wades of the world cause huge problems for police, wasted hours and money. Police have little interest in following up the so-called "sex offendors register'" because it's another beaurocratic nightmare that serves no purpose as it replicates something already in place ( called a "police record") as those charged with the welfare of Mr Glitter wil tell you when they must be really at his beck and call to divert yet another sleazy tabloid writer making everyone's life a misery.
Then there is an endless and bizarre campaign to terrify citizns that sex is a terrifying and frightful disease that will take hold of their children who may do sensual things with their peers. Control of people's lives is a powerful tool and we cannot have teens enjoying themselvs or doing what comes naturally.
Lastly is the concept , promoted by tabloids and politicians alike that all crime will one day cease or be solved. It never will-we are a brutal breed with many who do horrible things and the best we can do is try to control it.
That will never happen under the present system where tabloid mentality calls the shots. That is why Britain has, according to Scotland Yard, at least 20 powerful crime rings that each pull in billions of pounds a year and are now probably untouchable.
But hey-let's pick up on another sad mother who has had a horrible thing happen and have a Sallys or Myrtles Law and give the poor soul false hope that her loss will mean something-as long as it flogs newspapers and a pollie can sound angry and pound the table proclaiming he will "do something".
