The Damned United - magnificent 15 Years, 1 Month ago
Best film in ages; terrific, terrific cinematography (I said that after I saw Slumdog and this is just as good); superb script; great direction; brilliant acting especially Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall (at last a BAFTA and, if there's any justice, an Oscar) and finally I loved Michael Sheen.
I admired him as Kenneth Williams, Blair and Frost but couldn't like him. He's fabulous as Clough. Spot on.
I shall shortly put up the entire JK/Brian Clough story in Attitudes & Opinions.
But for now - go to The Damned United - even if you hate football; it's the best love story ever.

I must get to see it after those recommendations. If I had any hero at all in my life it was Brian Clough.
It is a shame that his family are not happy about it, and will be ignoring the film, though this is probably down to the unfavourable portrayal of Clough in the novel, which I understand is softened in the screen version.

This is brilliant Steve; it's a crucial scene in the film and I cannot tell you how it has improved my Saturday night's viewing... many thanks for the link.

Glad to be of service! It certainly lightened up my mood after seeing my team (Lincoln City) clinch yet another draw earlier today!

I saw the film today and really enjoyed it. Maybe not as good as slumdog or the reader but still very goo. I don't know where the love story is though? Between Clough and Peter Taylor?

This interview shows a mutual respect between the two managers. In the film this interview depicts nothing but friction between the two. I guess thats just poetic licence.

True but they do use a hefty percentage of real words from it and actually I think the loathing by Revie for Clough is there - also the coldness. Brian's humour is stronger in the real interview but still well captured by Sheen.
What a delicious movie though. I keep thinking about it.

I love the bit in the interview (real) where Cloughie gets Revie to say something and Clough responds with a very simple "good lad" to Don Revie who must have been at least some ten years his senior.

Many Derby fans, some of them not even born in the 1970's, still love to chant "We all hate Leeds" even though there is no longer the slightest connection between the clubs. 90 miles apart, neither team successful any longer, and not even in the same division.

JK is right...Film of the Year..probably the decade. Sheen is a genius in my view. He does the most difficult thing any actor can take on board. An impersonation without making it a characature, and so utterly believable.

Even Johnathon King get it a very good review and he doesn't even like football. My only crticism of Michael Sheen is that maybe he isn't quite hard enough to play Brian Clough, he looks about as threatening as Julian Clary.
