He has held the rank of chevalier, or knight, in the Legion d'Honneur since 2003 but was promoted to the rank of officer by French ambassador Maurice Gourdault-Montagne.

Mr Allingham, who now has his first great-great-great-grandchild, joined the Royal Navy Air Service in September 1915 before transferring to the RAF in April 1918.

As well as being the last founder member of the RAF, he is also the sole survivor of the Battle of Jutland.


Whadda guy!! And a true hero.

Hats off to Mr Allingham and his comrade Harry Patch, a true hero and gentle man. We owe more than we can ever repay to these men and their generation. We will never see their like again. Wrong time of year, I know {no it isn't, it's always the right time to pay tributes to the fallen}... but at the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Give him a Knighthood. Or is that honour now only reserved for greedy merchant bankers and royalty hugging rock stars?
