SPRING AWAKENING : Novello Theatre London 15 Years ago
Taking a night off last night I went to see the New Musical SPRING AWAKENING at the Novello Theatre at the Aldwych in London.

Probably some of you have already heard about this show. It has won Tonys galore and a Grammy for the Soundtrack and having seen a excerpt on TV it looked really good.

In the last 10 years I have been very disappointed by the lack of any Rock/Pop musical that was orginal. But the wait is now over.

This Musical is SENSATIONAL and is probably the best musical to come into London for many many many years. Believe the reviews.

The "Story" is based on a banned 19th century German Play about sex and growing up. With an indie pop soundtrack and a fantastic set the whole thing is quite an experience. Many musicals ask you to leave your brain outside - they are fluff. This musical is a deep and dark study of how adults treat children - yes with all the dark side on display.

It is about innocence and the way in which formal religious attitudes can rob young people of such innocence. It is about free thought and how society tries to stop young people thinking.

The energy of a TOTALLY UNKNOWN and very young cast is electric and there as some very sad moments ( as well as some very funny )

If you see one musical this year - make it this one. It will challenge you and it will inspire you. The music is very beautiful and original - the performances are totally awe inspiring and at times heartbreaking.

Tickets are not too expensive and there are standbys and special offers for 15 - 19 years olds as well - and the audience last night was younger than the traditional West End show - and responded with cheering both during the show and at the end. I really felt that I had more than my moneys worth from this night out.

Finally alThough the play on which it was based was written over 100 years ago this musical offers more to someone in 2009 than most entertainment experiences.

Anyone else seen the show either here or in the USA ?

Be interested in what you think.
