Caimbo, four lads who met at school and created their name as a slang word for Cambridge which is where the band hails from. Leonardo(vocals) Ally(Bass) Piers(guitar) and David(Drums) rolled up in their bandwagon looking like they had just spent the day surfing the big wave as a precursor of bigger things to come that evening. And believe me we were not disappointed. With what the band described to me as “disco kicking, bum shaking, Rock’n roll loving, monkey swinging madness in a bottle” with wristband Wednesdays and 2-4-1 Thursdays this quartet pretty much advertise themselves just by turning up somewhere. With influences including U2, the Police, Rolling Stones and Jamiroquai they created a sound that can only be described as simply; Rock. Nasty gnarly old school rock.
Back in a time where the eight bar guitar solo was an art form and when the bassist takes some time out from his normal duties to shake a plastic egg filled with rice is where Caimbo have teleported here from. They belong in a day when everyone is singing Sweet Home Alabama round a campfire, only to kick out the flames and break out the electrics so they can blow you away with such a diverse set of songs that you forget to write anything in the notebook you are supposed to be scribbling in, and simply enjoy the occasion. Guitarist Piers, with more effects than a Frenchman’s wardrobe can seemingly do no wrong. And with ally shaking that egg ever more furiously, Dave seemingly showing no signs of breaking sweat as he destroys the drum kit and Leo ripping up the vocals like Chris Cornell, Caimbo are the UK’s answer to the King’s of Leon. Personally I want to see a head to head battle between the two bands. And I certainly wouldn’t want to predict the outcome. I personally loved the song ’Disco Revolution’ and am looking forward to a release of some kind very soon indeed. Catch them at the Fly in London on the 22nd.
