Independent Newspaper on the brink 15 Years ago
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8026508.stm

It looks like the end for this newspaper. The revenues for so many newspapers and magazines are drying up and they are left high and dry. In the last months MAXIM and ARENA magazines have both gone under - both of them best selling magazines in their day and yet without any advertisers they cant exist.

The Independent has not really found a readership like the Guardian and Telegraph and Times who still dominate the "quality" newspapers. Maybe having 4 is too many with the Internet now being a first stop for many.

We never seem to mention articles from the Indie on here either - so perhaps it just has not got the va va voom in needs to survive.

It was launched around the time Eddy Shah gave us the advanced Today, and Post. Was surprised it lasted this long!
Seems porn and smut sell (sullivan, the sun),but quality struggles.
Only buy it occasionally myself, probally as you say because others already have that market cornered.

I remember a wonderfully accurate and direct editorial in The Independent back in the mid 90s about how we put children on pedestals and make them almost god-like creatures who should be believed at all times and never questioned. It reminded the reader that children are not always innocent or truthfull. I wish I'd kept it because it forecast and warned against the extreme direction which society has taken, and asked many of the questions which have since been echoed on this forum. It was quite a bold piece and I've read nothing like it in any other major publication.

I went to a fashion event last night here in Sydney and chatted to a Daily Telegraph photographer (Murdoch's biggest selling Oz tabloid)

He tells me the fear and loathing in News Ltd HQ is frightening..heads are rolling, jobs vanishing daily.

A certain sign of the times..Col Allan a long-time Murdoch favourite and editor of his New York Post received a rare public bollocking in front of dozens of staff, from Murdoch, after circulation of the NY Post has plunged nearly 25%

Unless the economy turns around fast ( and it shows NO signs of anything other than getting worse ) many more newspapers will go. Any without substantial assets will not be able to survive this.

Brown is looking more depressed each day - and even Obama looks terrified these days when he is in front of camera.

I still dont understand how the World's money seems to have been sucked up and disappeared.

Every City in the UK Is like a Ghost Town. On the A1 driving into London even Hampstead Garden Suburb ( a reasonably well off area of London !!! ) has rows of empty shops and the same in Highgate and Archway with Hollaway Road now seeming to be losing shops every day......London is usually last to be hit - but now it is closing down.

Theatres are half empty in what is peak season. Restaurants and Pubs are nearly empty in London. There are still tourists but very few Londoners about.
Discounting is rampant in every part of entertainment - and seems to be working.

But if the current position continues I can see the Autumn being even worse when GM and Chrysler finally go under and worldwide demand for goods falls further.

The Flu is the only story keeping us all from worrying at the moment !!!

yes the Great Mystery..just where is all that money ?

It doesn't evaporate.

I suspect the great financial calamity is not nearly as "mis-managed" as claimed..more like the conservative but often sensible ( and anti-Iraq invasion) Republican senator Pat Roberston who called the Iraq War "the greatest handover of public money into private hands ever witnessed"

Never thought the paper was particularly "independent" on any subject, often allowing vile human beings such as Johann Hari his arrogant and twisted distortion of facts as he has saw them. So I'm not surprised it's struggling.
Even the fabulous Yasmin Alibhai-Brown can't save it.

www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector...o-sort-out-debt.html

It could go under on Monday unless it gets an extra month......

Two West End shows posting closing notices for end of May and beginning of June in the last 7 days. Plus a major new play has cancelled its premier run in the West End for October this week.

Recession is biting deep in media and entertainment land in London.
