TOPIC: Andy Murray - King of Queens
#46047
Andy Murray - King of Queens 14 Years, 11 Months ago
Now fingers crossed for Wimbledon.

He's one of our most successful tennis players for generations and totally lacks all personal charm or charisma (but thank god he seems to have started shaving properly and has cut that dreadful teenage hair).

Is there one single person in Great Britain who won't be rooting for him?

Some of us actually remember Virginia Wade!

There are bound to be some people not rooting for him, just as some were willing Henman to fail. We are a nation that loves to knock success. We rejoice in failure.

I'll be rooting for every Brit who plays at Wimbledon, but Murray certainly seems to be our best chance.

In all fairness the field was very weak this year, probably the weakest of all time.

Wayne Ferreira, David Wheaton and Tim Mayotte all won the tournament having to contend with 3 of the world's top 4 players in there and beat the likes of Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Ivan lendl to lift the trophy.

Murray only had to beat the world ranked 48,52,25,90 and 16 to win it.

Tim Henman in contrast, only lost to the then current world number 1, in 4 successive years at the tournament making semis and finals.

Virginia Wade is a long time ago JK and I suspect she is really you in one of your wigs !

Meanwhile, in Germany, Tommy Haas beat Novak Djokovic to win his first title on grass.
Hass and Djokovic are massive threats to Murray at Wimbledon, as are Nadal (if he's fit) and Federer. Let's not put too much pressure on the kid.

Oh and yes........the sun really DID come out in the middle of June today!

Tommy Haas is a former world number 2 who lost 17 months through injury when he reached that pinnacle and he came very close to beating Federer at the French, leading 2 sets to love and break point to be serving for the match in the third set. At that point Federer had dropped only 7 points on serve all match so wasn't exactly struggling for form.

We shouldn't forget Murray has only got past the quarter finals of a grand slam tournament once in 14 attempts, Djokovic who is younger has done so 6 times already and won a title.

We've seen in the last month alone that Gonzalez and Del Potro can blow Murray away .

The media need to get off his back. The quarter finals would be a good achievement.

Hope we can all move on from the Henman versus Murray thing after this Wimbledon. Do I think Murray has a greater charisma and personality then Henman? Yes. Do I think that Murray has the killer instinct that makes great sportsmen the very greatest? (something Henman kept in his locker I think) YES! Do I think Murray can win it? Yes. He maybe doesn't have the right hair, the right accent, or the right parents, but the Brits at Wimbledon have to lose their snobbishness and start backing Murray.

I am greatly surprised JK appears a little shy of backing Murray as the true hope for British success at Wimbledon. Just because he doesn't like his hair?

Henman was a middle class fraud.
