Like Vince Cable on the economy, Neil has the experience on all sides and has been particularly perceptive about this drama.

On This Week he really summed up the Coulson affair perfectly.

I think the biggest mistake so far has been Yates of the Yard too quickly saying "nothing to pursue".

He should have said "grave reservations - we need longer to examine more closely".

Police behaviour, media behaviour, court behaviour - all need microscopic examination and dry cleaning.

The Guardian's coverage is so comprehensive it appears they have really done their research over a long period and are probably holding back with some information to drip feed it's readers.

The police are in a real no-win situation here. Even with just 2 who have made announcements including Clifford have dropped the police in it.

Either they didn't investigate far enough or withheld information. Whatever they do it won't stop the raft of bugged people suing the NoTW.

And no doubt there are former News hacks or even current ones that will be happy to assist.

Murdoch will no doubt be protected but this is going to be a big blow to his organization.

All he cares about is the bottom line-profit and he'll cut adrift anyone involved.

But he's an old man now and the sharks are circling including the other owners of News Ltd shares-up to 60%. Murdoch has an unusual control over his empire but it's often forgotten powerful US interests are always working to wrestle that from him.
