First class. A thoughtful piece which challenges way too many preconceptions and prejudices to be universally accepted. Should be required reading... but, sadly, is doomed to "voice in the wilderness" status.

Great article.

Mob rule, and meejah sensationalism, two very good reasons why many of our laws make no sense.

a very concise and well written piece that sums up exactly what I think. And most of the comments were encouraging.

I'm even angrier though-those who support these idiotic registers or 'Megan's Law' I believe are as a guilty as those who commit crimes because they foster the belief that some sort of listing is going to protect children.

I do know one copper in Oz who works on one of these registers and he considers it a f**king pain in the arse-all his time is spent checking on people he knows will never commit another crime, or are people who were involved in relationships but one may have been underage..etc. meanwhile really nasty hideous crimes happen every day because there aren't enough cops to go around.

And the police themselves are getting pretty jack of frigging politicians who fall into line with tabloid thinking-especially as they aren't the ones on the front line.

I was quite pleased when I told him I met the last police minister and told him to his face he was just a useless fat f**king lump of lard who pandered to the lowest common denominator (and got the boot 3 months later anyway). He reckoned every cop wanted to say the same.
