For ages I insured through Blue Cross Blue Shield rather than BUPA - it made sense for me to be insured with an easily recognisable American company since I was in the USA so much; over 40 years at about $5000 a year, they made $200,000 from me and never a single claim.
Her Majesty's Prison Service provides excellent NHS coverage for free and, indeed, being diagnosed as diabetic (due to the food, lack of exercise and stress) they gave me about £2000 of drugs a year which I now have to pay for myself. Obviously I did not renew my Blue Cross coverage.
But I've always championed an NHS type service for Americans. If Obama pulls it off my admiration for him will soar.
