I must track down a broadcast on local radio here with an American Laura Norder expert who was amazing. She said the whole system, particularly in the USA but I expect the UK as well is crumbling and will collapse at some stage.
Society has opted for pure revenge, aided by the meejah and is filling the jails with future problems which will escalate beyond control.Home detention with community work orders are her solution for almost every crime except the most serious.

I was speaking to a local probation worker who is despairing of the increasing work load she is getting...young men and women mostly in community housing who get banged up for three months because of harsh laws demanding it ( and with no bail lunancy even when they are found innocent)..they not only lose their housing and go back to the end of the list, the penalty really is more like 3 years in recovery time. She estimates because of this at least 60% of her 'clients' are back at crime within 2 weeks of emerging from jail , full of resentment.

And all because gutless politicians prostrate themselves at the feet of tabloid editors.

A friend who knew Gordon Park (the "lady in the lake" guy) and swears he was 100% innocent is deeply depressed today (Park killed himself). Taken in conjunction with the Sunday Times feature (see other thread), it really is reaching melt down. And in one of the papers today - a big feature on the absurdity of jurors going home, logging on and finding appalling internet information on defendants... so true. It happened in my trial where jurors Googled my name and read about other claims (thrown out by the judge before the trial - but that fact wasn't included by the media, naturally). Of course they thought I was guilty - "he's done it before". I hadn't but judges didn't understand the new technology. "Don't read any newspapers" was the instruction to the jury!
