Vincent Van Gogh 14 Years, 2 Months ago
When is anyone going to have the guts to make a big budget proper film about this tortured genius? His life albeit sad was never dull...a brilliant guy. A loner mostly (the vey best people always are) in Paris he'd spend the evening figuring out ways of getting a meal and a bed for the night. One female aquaintaince described him as being 'deeply unattractive and smelling of whiskey and urine...'

There's been one recent attempt at a proper film (the Hollywood Kirk Douglas movie was dire).. an independent Dutch movie from what I have gathered...

Following the documentary ‘Vincent - The Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh’, The ‘Vincent van Gogh in Etten’ Foundation produced a Dutch movie titled ‘Vincent van Gogh, een zaaier in Etten’ [Vincent van Gogh, a sower in Etten].

The movie is about Vincent van Gogh and his relation with Etten. The motion picture is based on research which was conducted by Ron Dirven, a self-proclaimed Van Gogh expert, and Rebecca Nelemans. In the movie Van Gogh is portrayed by actor Jochum ten Haaf, known for his role as Vincent in the British theatre production ‘Vincent in Brixton

Etten is a small village in the south of the Netherlands.

I wish to travel back in time and hug this guy (despite the smell of piss) and tell him his paintings are truly remarkable.

Which of course they are.

But I do wish they'd make a big budget proper film showing his life warts and all.

Here is one very bad attempt...

When Tommy and I went to the superb exhibition at the Royal Academy last week, I stood in front of his Autumn Landscape painting with tears running down my cheek because the shades of brown were so brilliant. You can never, ever appreciate the beauty of Van Gogh's work until you see the real things in person.

I'd have loved to have gone JK...I did visit an exhibition in 2007 in Madrid. 'The Sower' is the one that has stayed with me. It was stunning and induced brilliant dreams. The sun over the cornfield was remarkable. Truly amazing. As you say his use of colour was breathtaking. A truly appalling shame he died believing his works were never going to be appreciated. The ultimate tragedy.

I have to echo what you both posted FC and JK. I saw a major Van Gogh exhibition 3 years ago in Budapest. The paintings look truly remarkable when you see them close up.
