TOPIC: Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? 14 Years, 2 Months ago
Wayne Bridge has pulled out of the World Cup because someone had an affair with his EX girlfriend?

Should we all start getting deeply offended if someone we once shook hands with kisses a stranger?

I'm very confused.

I think we should all refuse to read or buy any newspaper which employs anyone who has had an affair outside of wedlock.

Disgraceful!

This is all getting very very boring now. Terry will quit next..and then we can only hope that England win the world cup without them. All this highlights is how uncommitted some of the players are to the national team. We of course don't stand a chance of winning it with or without them. Again I say...time for Capello to call upon Beckham, because it's all gone horribly wrong before a ball has even been kicked limply.

I think he pulled out to avoid ill feeling in the squad in the build up to the World Cup. There is no guarantee that either him or Terry would be picked, but I think he should be applauded for putting the interests of his national team before his own personal ambitions. He's young and he will have other opportunities.

So, yes JK, I would say you were missing that point.

Given that Mr Bridge is a father and that there may be a good chance that the mother of his child was having it off with Mr Terry at the time they were together, I think he's done the right thing.

With Wayne now bullied into jelly and Ashley Cole wrecked, Terry out and God knows who next (Rooney surely), the "ruin England's World Cup chances" by the tabloids is a huge success. The only thing that puzzles me is - why are they doing it?

I don't think it is the tabloids that are ruining England's chances. It is the players themselves. They must know by now that if you have an affair with a fellow player's ex-wife/gf then its going to get a lot of publicity. Tabloid readers want to read this crap. Wayne Bridge was only a fringe player, so his withdrawal from the squad is only to affect their chances. Remember in Euro 96 in England when their were lots of reports have England going on Drinking Binges between games and that famous dentist chair, however they still had one of their best tournaments in years beating Holland 4-1 and reaching the semi-finals and also that famous Gazza goal against Scotland.

The whole of the tabloid/Sky TV coverage of football is centred on exacerbating divisions between rival fans. So support for the national side requires a completely unnatural emotional shift - suddenly loving some of the players you've been loathing all season.

As for individuals like Terry, well, the only surprise is why it's taken so long for him to be rumbled as a thoroughly nasty piece of work. Typically, all of the far worse stuff went by without much comment and it was only when it was his sexual antics that things suddenly got serious.

Rooney is still odds on to get a red card in the World Cup - he's pathetically easy to rattle. What England need is players with wit and intelligence, and the dearth of those is not the media's fault.
