Many {but not quite enough} years ago I lived in Hull. Wherin dwelled two people whose names should forever be enshrined. One, the owner of a Chines takeway, rejoiced in the moniker Wan K. Hing {honest, I jest not}, while another, a resident of the upmarket {for Hull, at least} village of Kirkella, was none other than a Dr. Goebbels. History has always taught that he went west in 1945. I never knew that they meant literally.

There used to be a GP when I was growing up called Sidebottom, but he insisted on pronouncing his name 'Siddy-bot-ahm'. Magnificent. There was an American sports star a while ago called Dick Trickle. That takes, er, some beating.

There used to be a BBC cameraman called Bob Sleigh. His name appeared on many credits in the late 70s / early 80s.

I also remember a jockey called Bastard, sometimes referred to by pundits as the jockey with the unfortunate name. It had a French pronunciation I think.

I arranged for a friend to be interviewed by The Guardian once..a singer called Mandy Miami and the journalist mocked her name..the journo's name was Linda Christmas !

We had a kid in our class called Richard Head..no prizes for guessing what the poor lad was called ! (it took me a year to work it out)

We had another kid called Cecil who got his parents to change his name to Ricky...years later I ran into him and he had changed it back to Cecil as he thought it sounded more intelligent.
