My neighbour violently attacked by his own dog- opinions please..... 14 Years, 1 Month ago
Apologies for the length of this post, but I am rather alarmed to say the least and would appreciate any opinions.

On Sunday afternoon there was a huge commotion out in the street and I looked out to see what the screaming and shouting was about.

I could see a huge fight with dogs and people involved. From talking to other neighbours, it seems my neighbour's dog attacked another dog in the street. My neighbour's dog is a huge thing and, as usual, he was walking along without a lead or even a collar. In trying to pull the dogs apart, my neighbour sustained serious injuries on both arms and I saw him staggering away with blood all over him.

The dog kept trying to go back for more, but somehow, through shouting at him, my neighbour managed to get him back indoors.

I was watching from my window. I didn't go out partly because I was afraid, but also because there were 3 other people there helping.

My neighbour appeared in deep shock and was almost unable to stand. The paramedics were called and a chap came and treated the wounds then took him to hospital for a tetanus and he has been back today for stitching of the wounds.

Apparently, the other dog sustained major gashes to its head.

My neighbour apparently maintains his injuries were inflicted by the other dog, but witnesses say this was not true and almost impossible.

I want the dog to go. He's frequently out without collar and lead, is a very strong kind of Japanese fighting dog and is often unsupervised in our shared front garden when I go out. He barks at me but in a friendly way, but I have always felt uneasy.

I think my neighbour thinks I didn't see anything, but I am gobsmacked that he can say that 'dogs do this kind of thing' while having both arms completely bandaged.

I have spoken to the RSPCA twice and they have said that they will investigate in confidence, but so far nothing. Meanwhile, although the dog is now on a lead in the street, he lets him off in the park around dogs. There is surely a disaster waiting to happen.

Opinions pleas- I'm a bit shaken up to tell the truth.

I'm useless on this topic as I so love all dogs - often quite foolishly - I'd pet a rabid one!

As a dog owner, (I own two), the first thing to know is it is illegal for a dog over 6 months old not to be wearing a collar and identity tag at all times - regardless of whether the owner uses a lead or not.

And, though I don't know the details of this case, (except what you've written), most problems involving dogs are more to do with the owner's failings than the dogs.

I live in an area where it seems every other person owns a dog. Our dog has his own pack of doggy friends he sees each morning as I walk to work. He has a great time and it is good socialisation for him.

However one of my (excuse pun) pet hates is owners who walk their dog without a lead everywhere - even more so than those who don't pick up their dog's poo. It's fine in fields and parks, but on high streets with cars going past and people around it's totally irresponsible. Even the most placid animal can be unpredictable and can suddenly run across the road especially when there is another dog involved.

Your neighbour made the mistake of going in to try and break the dogs up. Either dog could have bitten him as he got in the way. If it has happened with other dogs before then his dog should be muzzled (this can be legally enforced), although I have to admit, I would not trust a dog like that with people and would probably have them put down - they are not happy when they behave like this. I had a dog who hated German Shepherds, but he was gentle with everyone else. It's not the dog's fault - he has just not been socialised properly. Battersea is full of these poor things who are not good with either children or other dogs.

I'd love to have a German Shepherd but I travel so much it wouldn't be fair!

A few weeks ago I was trapped in between two stiles letting some dogs and owners pass when the dogs suddenly attacked each other. The owner did not know why - they have never done it before he said. Well, I have never felt so afraid. I was pinned against the hedge whilst the two collie dogs fought. Blood, fur and the owners yelling. The owner grabbed one by the chest and seperated them, but he was flung to the floor. He ended up gashed and shaking. I left the scene feeling numb and speechless. If that level of ferocity can come from a collie dog, what about something tougher?

I used to like dogs very much, but after being trapped there with two wild animals I now am afraid of such happening again.

I was walking along a street once when a vicious fight broke out between two people. Oddly enough, all the other people who came along the street were well behaved. Apparently when two humans fight it doesn't mean that the entire species is unsafe. I wonder if it's the same with dogs.

I suggest a serious long friendly meeting over a cup of tea between your neighbour and several of your other worried neighbours suggesting a sensitive but protective way to make sure there are no future incidents with both sides giving way, rather like Sin Fein and the Unionists.

According to The One Show and the BBC, pitbulls are trained to be killers of babies.

God the BBC is wonderful these days. The information it gives us!

Have you ever heard of a cat attacking it's owner ?

dogs are for farms..they're cute but they should be on a farm..they crap all over the footpath and in parks.

I've never seen the appeal of dogs. They aren't cute, cats are cute. On the whole they are smellly and scruffy, they crap all over the pavements and greet you by jumping all over you in an annoying fashion. I hate it when women kiss dogs, it's disgusting, dogs lick their own balls for goodness sake.

some dogs are usefull (such as guide dogs), however many are naturally viciious and should be mussled for our safety.

I love cats because they're independent and snub you most times but always know when you need a bit of a cuddle(you have to do the cuddling of course but it's theraputic)

Cats lick their bottoms as well, then lick their coats which we stroke so they can be just as digusting. And they don't always bury their poo as it is so often thought.
Enjoy your lunch!!
