Like Matt Smith much more than Tennant.
Not convinced yet by Moffat - don't think he's anywhere near Russell T's league but then I consider RTD a genius.
I've watched every first episode of a new Doctor since Jon Pertwee, plus the first Hartnel and Troughton ones as repeats, and have learned not to expect too much. I like Matt Smith but was not impressed with the script, although I've always said that when a new Doctor arrives. Steven Moffat wrote the best (and most original) of the stories during the RTD era, although this one was a bit of a mess. I expect things to get much better as the series goes on.
I'd still like to see Anthony Horrowitz write a few episodes of Doctor Who.
Al and I tend not to agree on the new Dr Whos - and he's far more of a fan of the old series than I was, but I can beat him here (due to age)... I actually saw the first shows when they went out!
I felt Matt Smith owed something to Troughton's portrayal.
Lots of complaints about the new theme music, but I thought it was fresh and imaginative.
Can't judge the whole series on one episode, but thought the production was first class and some of the camerawork totally different to RTD's vision of the series.
Matt Smith actually comes across as fairly well educated and articulate. I don't just mean when he's in Doctor Who. He has the appearance of a young nutty professor, which makes him suitable for the role. So long as they don't tumble down the heartthrob pit like the last lot did I think the series should be very good.
8.4 million viewers - described as a "huge hit"... not quite as much as Britain's Got X Factor which has been known to get 9 million. Twenty five years ago I got an extraordinary 9.7 million viewers on BBC2 with Entertainment USA. Funny old world.
Yes, Pru, Dr Who was a kiddies show (which I never liked) in the old days. RTD's genius turned it into a terrific mass appeal, intelligent entertainment. I suspect Moffat will revert it to great kiddies TV.
It became a kids show, but when it was first created it was aimed at an adult audience with more Sci_Fi than action. When kids discovered it and liked it the BBC then decided to target the younger audience more, which was when the show began to lose it's way.
Funny, but Who was always made by the BBC Drama department, and never from BBC Childrens. It's a family show, not a kids show and never has been intended as such!
To be honest it's the relentless hype that turns me off these days. When it was first relaunched I watched and was very impressed. Then it seemed as though every single aspect was so over-exposed I was tired before each actual episode reached the screen. That and the strange blokeish clique who take it SO seriously in a silly proprietorial way and I feel compelled to avoid it.
