Botney's a strange piece of work, isn't he? He used to block 'personality'-led documentaries when others were trying to make them, then he suddenly decided the exception to the rule was the Personality Known as Botney - the one human being who makes Armani jackets look like disused potato sacks from the back yard of Mr Byrite. And he actually seems to be acquiring many of the old cliches at which he used to sneer, e.g.: 'Nothing can be said about Van Gogh that he didn't say himself' - yes there is, mate, there's loads that can be said about him that he didn't say himself! Er, however...it WAS an excellent programme!

It was good but it left me wanting more, it didn't convey enough Van Gogh's inner torment for me nor the terrible predicaments he found himself in. What we do know is that he was envied by his peers, hated by his neighbours,and even fell foul of the law. A loner, a misfit, an alcoholic....but don't you just love him?
