Teacher In Bolton Arrested Over ‘Sex Texts’ (From The Bolton News)

8:35am Saturday 17th April 2010

A HIGH school teacher has been arrested on suspicion of inciting sexual activity with a child.

Police were called to Thornleigh Salesian College in Astley Bridge at 11.30am on Thursday where they arrested a 23-year-old unnamed female teacher.

Officers were yesterday quizzing her about the allegations concerning a 14-year-old boy.

A source told The Bolton News the investigation revolved around the alleged sending of “highly inappropriate”

Following the arrest the teacher was immediately suspended from the school because of the nature of the allegations — but education bosses stressed her removal from the school in Sharples Park was a “neutral act” pending the investigation.

Bolton Council said it was aware of the arrest and education chiefs moved quickly to reassure parents at the school, which has 1,625 pupils, of which 366 are in the sixth form.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that a teacher at Thornleigh Salesian College has been arrested, and has been suspended pending a police investigation.”

He added: “Bolton Council takes all incidents potentially involving the safety and welfare of children very seriously and we have instigated the necessary procedure to ensure pupils’ safety.”

A police spokesman said: “Shortly after 11.30am on Thursday 15 April 2010, police were called to Thornleigh School in Astley Bridge. A 23-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of inciting sexual activity with a child and remains in police custody.”

Father John Flynn, the Diocese of Salford’s communications officer, said: “The Diocese of Salford is aware of the arrest of a member of staff from Thornleigh Salesian College on suspicion of inciting sexual activity. The school is co-operating fully with the authorities to ensure the case is dealt with promptly.

The relevant safeguarding authorities have been informed and are following all necessary procedures.”

In the school’s most recent Ofsted report the care, guidance and support given to pupils, including keeping them safe was given a grade two mark, indicating it was “good”.

Inspectors for the Government’s watchdog stated in their report: “The school provides very effectively for students’ welfare. Policies and procedures for safeguarding students are in place.”

No one from the school was available for comment.
