Well, off the top of my head, I think Alec Douglas-Home was another, wasn't he? Macmillan resigned, he was nudged into the vacant leadership of his party, he renounced his peerage and was slipped into a safe seat in a by-election. Then Wilson won the next election. I think that's right.

You only need to go back to James Callaghan to know he hasn't made history. He never won an election either. I think there were loads. Alex Douglas Home in the 1960s too. (though I'm too busy to check that one out, so I may be wrong).

I believe that Brown was the shortest {in terms of period in office not height} serving Labour PM in history. So he has made history. Though not the sort he'd have liked.
