JUSTICE PROPOSALS : Thoughts 13 Years, 12 Months ago
Here is the nitty gritty from the BBC:

JUSTICE
Anonymity in rape cases to be extended to defendants. "Rehabilitation revolution" - paying independent providers whose schemes reduce reoffending. Full review of sentencing. Deductions to be made from prisoners' earnings, with money going to victims' funds. Historical convictions for consensual gay sex for over-16s to be treated as spent and removed from criminal records. Neighbourhood "restorative justice" to deal with anti-social behaviour and low-level crime.

I like the ANON stuff in rape cases which I take it refers to all SEXUAL ABUSE cases ? or it should do if it has not yet been clarified. The idea of INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY could save many people from being falsely accused. Publicity surrounding famous people especially ( Think about it - Michael Jackson would still be alive now if he had remained ANON until being convicted.....he was KILLED by the media - like Princess Diana ) means they can never get a fair trial and will always suffer whatever the verdict because the damage has been done.

Not sure about the REHAB stuff - but if it helps prisoners then that is good.

Sentencing reviews - a good idea. Too many silly short sentences should be replaced by Community Service leaving only those serving sentences of over a year in prisons. That would save money and stop youngsters learning in what are called "universities of crime"

Historical Convictions for Gay Sex to be removed. Excellent and about time. Shows the TORIES and LIBS are going to be even better for gay people than silly Labour.

Neighbourhood justice is a great idea. The POLICE seem to make things worse and should only be called in the last resort for serious crime. We need to see people become responsible for low level crime and not keep blaming the POLICE for it. ASBOS should be stopped as well and replaced by a community type of order by courts asking offenders to work with Community Projects which should be funded everywhere accross the UK. We need to restore and create community - we need to bring people of all races and creeds and classes together after the DIVISIVE years of New Labour.

Deductions from Prisoner's earnings for Victims....seeing as the UNEMPLOYED rate is around £2.50 a week ( out of which Prisoners have to buy everything at ordinary prices ) I cant see how this is anything other than a gimmick. After reading INSIDE OUT I realise some prisoners get paid £14 a week if they do a serious job.......but £14 a week is hardly big earning. How many hours work is this covering ? 20 hours at about 80p an hour wage.....can see big problems with this. Not least victims having unrealistic expectations of compensation - and then prisoners becoming unemployed in Prison because they dont actually get any money for working making it pointless to work. As far as I am aware work is voluntary in prisons in 2010 unlike in the stone breaking days pre War ?
