My letter to the paper...

As a Guardian fan I support the paper's crusades and it is quite right to battle on behalf of genuine rape victims but the constantly slanted coverage as expressed in your article "Anger at move to give rape defendants anonymity" is beginning to jar.

There are thousands of us victims of false allegations who are delighted by the new Government initiative to stop greedy liars from approaching publicists to get fat media fees for celebrity accusations. The current law allows incredible miscarriages of justice - most of which, like my own, spend years before getting righted, if they ever do.

I myself witnessed inmates in prison scan the local papers for accused teachers or vicars so they could jump on the compensation bandwagon. Not just for cash but for sympathy and better treatment inside. There are so many motives for accusers to lie or exaggerate - revenge, desire for attention, explanation for failure or addiction - not always merely money.

Without the attendant media publicity, hundreds of innocent men and women will now no longer suffer. All we need now is for compensation monies only to be paid to legitimate doctors or psychiatrists for treatment and the industry will collapse completely. We thousands of falsely accused don't ask for support - just a fair balance of both sides of the picture.

Rapes are often misunderstandings fuelled by drugs or drink. How many footballers can now sleep better in their boots? And the hundreds of appeals eventually granted rarely get the coverage of the prurient crimes alleged, often by busty blondes. I would have hoped a newspaper with the Guardian's claimed liberal credentials would at least give support to both sides of the argument.
