drinking driving limit
There is a call to reduce the drink driving limit to 50mg (i.e. 1/2 pint) from 80mg. I don't think this is necessary and will have no benefits. They say that it will reduce deaths on the road by 150 per year. Is this because there are 150 people killed on the road by people between the old limit and the new limit. If so how do they know that this was a factor in the deaths, it is more likely that they were driving carelessly because they were in a rush.
This new law will result in 100's of country pubs going bust, as people won't even be allowed to have a swift half. The current limit is based on tests which showed the level of alcohol required to reduce reaction times. There is no need to reduce this limit. The only reason they are reducing it, is because drink driving is so frowned upon (rightly so when the driver is actually drunk) and therefore any knee jerk reaction will be popular.
People who have maybe 1 pint will be criminalised for no good reason. Are you a worse driver after 1 pint, than after 0 pints. Some might say that your nerves will be steadied and thus you could be a better driver, in the same way that darts players play better after 1 or 2 drinks, but then their performance tails off.
