Well, obviously meeting and interviewing him on WMCA when he was 18, and finding him a really nice guy, played a part but what I really loved was that he played such up and down tennis; not like an automaton (Borg, Becker, Sampras) but every now and then dreadful but likewise suddenly coming alive and being brilliant. It made for truly exciting games.

By the way I now have solid proof I was in New York at the Lendl/McEnroe Open Final when Ivan beat John for the first time - on precisely the day the Old Bailey said I was committing a crime in London. Time travel?

Well jk, he was a great player and hopefully didyou a big favour.

Living in the uk during the 80's we were only exposed to Wimbledon and any wins in the us open, and other events would come under the radar.

I'm sure he's a more cheerfull bloke off the court and I believe he tried to get into professional golf and hanging up this tennis racquet.
