State Child Abuse : The Shocking Headline from the Mail 13 Years, 10 Months ago
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1295669...youth-offenders.html

Truly shocking.

No wonder BABY P died - no wonder Mr Moat was killed - no wonder Tomlinson was murdered - no wonder De Menezes was assassinate - no wonder ONE MILLION iraquis were killed - no wonder we tortured prisoners......

What sort of country is the UK ? A brutal Police State dictatorship - and CAMERON and CLEGG need to get a grip FAST and sort these things out. They must not listen to the BRUTAL POLICE SPINNERS.

End PRISON SENTENCES under one year
STOP locking up Mentally Ill people.
STOP torture in our Prisons and Young Offenders Units
STOP torture of Asian prisoner in the name of terror prevention
MAKE IT 7 DAYS WITHOUT CHARGE MAX not 28 DAYS for terror suspects.
STOP all cases without FORENSIC or EYEWITNESS evidence going to court.
STOP all cases with HEARSAY evidence.

I accept most of what you say - although the above would be one exception.

Simply because of the dificulty in gathering evidence/information (in a week) from numerous locations and countries, worldwide.

Thanks BR, you write:

"MAKE IT 7 DAYS WITHOUT CHARGE MAX not 28 DAYS for terror suspects."

Why wait even 7 days? Why wait at all? Why arrest someone at all if you can't state which law you suspect them of having broken?

The practice of arresting without charge is a recent innovation in British legal history. It dates back about thirty years.

Before that, it was proposed in 1943 for foreign nationals believed to be a threat to this country at a time when it really did face a grave existential threat, unlike now.

Consider the following speech delivered in the House of Commons at the time:

"The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law..is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist."

They describe the power of our present government. They are the words of Winston Churchill. He called it "in the highest degree odious" and "the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist".

Best Wishes,
Jim

Jim - I agree with every word you have written. My suggestion of 7 days is for the Government - though I agree that it is ridiculous that the Police arrest people whom they dont like the look of then try and build a case against them ( In the old days it was called Stitching someone up etc )#

I expect it is because they only work 6 months a year they need to get as many arrests in the bag as quickly as possible before they go on their hols.

All good stuff - but not pertaining to the real world (2010 and post Churchill). BTW, BR stated 'without charge' - not arrest.

If Jim's view was accepted, the London bombers could not have been even held - if evidence (inconclusive, as it might well have been) was available to make a reasonable person believe their plans to kill and maim.

We would not be able to detain people who had given the authorities clear cause to think they were up to no good.

Not a good idea.

Therefore - dated by over half a century!

Undoubtedly, terrorism (assisted by technology, WMD etc.) have made changes to the law necessary; it is a changing world - and much smaller; the law must keep pace.

Holding suspects for a few weeks, to check them out, is not draconian in these dangerous times - particularly in the UK where the Current Threat Level is Severe; this means that 'a terrorist attack is highly likely'.

Be vigliant.
