Your comment underneath is also excellent.

Time to listen to those intelligent people who have spent some time in these places i agree.

It is a tragedy that Prison is used as a drug and mental health unit. We have basically replaced the VICTORIAN ASYLUMS with VICTORIAN PRISONS - how can that be progress ? It is just smoke and mirrors by New labour.

Cameron's Big Society should aim to reduce the Mentally Ill in a prison to almost ZERO per cent by the end of the 5 years. That would be real humane progress.

Prisons should be for criminals who are a danger to society.

My comment seems to have mysteriously disappeared 51 minutes later BR - I wonder why.

Funny that JK

Free speech is alive and well at the Daily Mail.

Crazy world we live in when someone called Jonathan King openly posts under his own name ( unlike the thousands on there who hide behind anon names ) and you post intelligently and yet you get censored by the Daily Mail.....

I feel that this is a gift to any heavyweight paper that believes in freedom of speech.

Does that mean anyone who has been in prison does not have the right to free speech on the Daily Mail site anymore ? and only those who have NEVER been in prison are allowed to comment about things they have no first hand experience about.

The country is now run by little Hitler experts pontificating about things they know nothing about - so no wonder we are in such a mess and our debt is so massive.

Whatever way you look at it - this country is going down the pan - and it should not.

JK's comment for those who did not see it : what is wrong with this comment ?

Brilliant; if politicians paid more attention to people like Jonathan and myself with personal experience of Britain's prisons (I spent several months in Elmley too), they might do something valuable instead of obeying tabloid headlines. We need secure, safe and humane homes for the mentally disturbed - a hefty chunk of those in prison. As for those who talk about "holiday camps" like Nick Smith in Bath - spend some time inside and see for yourself mate. Caricatures do nobody any favours.
