This is a very good account of the AIG bailout:

http://www.thenation.com/article/153929/...out-scandal?page=0,0

"The government’s $182 billion bailout of insurance giant AIG should be seen as the Rosetta Stone for understanding the financial crisis and its costly aftermath (...) These financial dealings are monstrously complicated, but this account focuses on something mere mortals can understand—moral confusion in high places, and the failure of governing institutions to fulfill their obligations to the public.
(...)
Bailing out AIG effectively meant rescuing Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Merrill Lynch (as well as a dozens of European banks) from huge losses. Those financial institutions played the derivatives game with AIG, the esoteric practice of placing financial bets on future events. AIG lost its bets, which led to its collapse. But other gamblers—the counterparties in AIG’s derivative deals—were made whole on their bets, paid off 100 cents on the dollar. Taxpayers got stuck with the bill."

"Over the past few months, we have learned about extraordinary levels of excessively bad corporate behavior.

As bad as the Bailouts were from an economic, wealth transfer, and moral hazard perspectives, it turns out that the grim reality was an order of magnitude worse than previously believed.

We have since learned that many TARP recipients, bailed out banks and other ne’er-do-wells were actively engaged in cooking their books. I don’t mean various FASB 157 permission to lie, and other legal but nefarious activities. I am referring to the 2002-2007 era of scams, frauds, and outright theft."

as I said previously-my father was the Managing Director of a bank for the last 30 years before he retired.

He used to tell me he had come to the conclusion banks were amongst the most appaling institutions that covered their avarice with legalities and rubbish about helping people with mortgages etc.

He rose through the ranks because he took a chance on funding the poorest immigrants on the basis if they had crossed the world for a new life they were probably the safest bet. One was one of the founders of Westfield who at least turned up to his funeral.

He always said he was kicked upstairs because his ideas which had made a fortune for the bank were regarded as "redundant".
