It is suprising that the LIBERALS have not tried to change the "life sentences" given to anyone who has a sentence of over 30 months in prison for violent or sexual offences.

Other countries in Europe believe this "Law" is a severe breach of human rights of an individual - yet New Labour brought in this illegal law in 2003 and it is still in place and the COALTION has not yet dealt with it.

There are even NON CONVICTED people ( 25% ) on this register - which is totally baffling ? how can they be on a register without a criminal record ?

This is true Police State fascism. Note they dont report to a court - but to the Police. It is basically similar to the way in which the JEWS were treated.

The media has made it hard for anyone to complain about this - because you are seen as an apologist for violence or sexual offenders - but that is not the case. If someone is so dangerous they have to be monitored for the rest of their life then why let them out of prison in the first place ? because signing a piece of paper once a year and being monitored is not going to stop a dangerous criminal from re-offending.

What it does do however, is make it more likely that the person will never change - they cant escape their past mistakes because they are forever on this register. It makes rehabilitation impossible for those trying to help - and in my view puts the public and children at much greater risk because there is NO INCENTIVE for offenders to reform because they are on this register until the day they die - and if they refuse they get 5 years in prison !!! so they are basically "Prisoners of the State Police" note it is the POLICE not the courts or the Prison service - they are Prisoners of the Police forever.

This is truly not a free country when such NAZI style illegal laws remain in place. People make mistakes - does that mean for the rest of their life the Police will be able to dictate to them where they live - how they live and where they go ? well in the UK 2010 this is the case.

New Labour turned the UK into a Nazi style Police state. It is important that CAMERON actually sorts this out in the next 12 months and complies with European Law. It is funny how events get banned because of European Law etc etc - but when it suits we ignore it.

Not widely reported but the "life sentence" on the Register now does seem to be illegal. Though I cant find any government document suggesting compliance with this - I just take it Judges are aware they can't put anyone on the register for more than 10 years under current law.

In addition if someone is not a risk - then the Court has said they should not be on the register at all. Which basically means this "one size fits all" justice is unfair and should not happen.

Hopefully, the co-alition may change this. Only rapists should be required to be on a register for more than the length of their sentence. Flashers - voyeurs - bum pinchers etc are really no danger to anyone and the resources this register takes actually takes away time from the real job of protecting people from the genuinely dangerous people out there - of which there are very few in my opinion.

Basically, this register is just a way of more Police State control over peoples' lives. It has not been shown to protect one child - can anyone name one example of where someone being registered has helped a Police investigation and led to a criminal conviction ( except for someone being jailed for breaking the stupid register in the first place ) because I cant ever remember seeing one. I expect this system costs TENS OF MILLIONS a year - yet it does not deliver anything in return.

Scrap it unless there is a tangible benefit and put the money into child protection services such as more social workers for children who have been abused ( Like Baby P needed )
